The members met during classical guitar lesson through the same tutor Joshua Rogers. They decided to get together and formed Black Opium, winning the Peoples Choice Award at the regional Rock Quest Comps. This was amazing as they had only formed the band two months prior to the comp. They later changed the band name to Frailty and played at community events for free gaining a reputation in Kawerau as a hard hitting heavy metal band. In 2008 the band disbanded (no pun intended).
They remained very good friends and made a pact to attend Bay of Plenty Polytech together to do the diploma of music in 2010. This was to be a huge undertaking but they managed to pull it all together and reformed the band as Black Opium once more, this time with a new talented band member - Vocalist Quinn Hireme.
Together they have tweaked their sound which could be described as vivacious and exciting.
Black Opium have currently made it into the finals of the regional Battle of the Bands and we wish them the best of luck.
Well done for being offered a record deal you guys. Get song writing :-)
